A Family Built on Service

I grew up in California as the youngest in a family of four. Although my family was not churchgoing, service to others was heavily emphasized — especially military service. My parents stressed the value of hard work, discipline, and obedience to authority, and so I was drawn to military service.

Though the month of May is ending, it is always in season to invoke Our Lady! Virtually endless titles have been bestowed upon Mary through the centuries. Each one carries a different historical significance, drawing us to reflect on a different aspect of spirituality, and reaching us in different seasons of our life. Here are three titles for Mary, perhaps less well known but all contained within the Litany of Loreto, that you may use as you ask for her intercession for your business, your Legatus chapter, and your family and personal life.

Virgin, Most Powerful

The Blessed Mother is often described as meek. And yes, she certainly is! But I love to imagine her not just as a demure figure of femininity, but also, as a powerful warrior for the Lord. We know through both Scripture and tradition that it is Mary who uniquely terrifies the enemy.

As part of this month’s Executive Webinar series, Legatus members joined Jordan Burke, founder of Do the Harder Thing, for a conversation on prayer, discipline, and remaining rooted in Christ amid cultural pressure. A former law enforcement officer and speaker with the Avila Institute, Burke focuses his work on spiritual formation, practical discipline, and helping Catholics pursue holiness in everyday life.

Alleluia, He is risen!

If this statement seems a little behind the times, think again. After a long 40 days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in the Lenten season, the Church gives us 50 days to celebrate Easter with intention!
