Carbon Credits vs. Offsets: What Every Sustainability Manager Should Know

Carbon Credits vs. Offsets: What Every Sustainability Manager Should Know

As sustainability becomes a core focus across industries, the terms "carbon credits" and "carbon offsets" often come up in conversations about reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For sustainability managers, understanding the differences and strategic uses of these mechanisms is critical to achieving environmental goals while meeting regulatory and stakeholder expectations. Here's what you need to know.

A circular economy is imperative to global climate action

After the commotion and commitments at COP26, there has been much discussion on what’s next for global climate action and how to align action with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

At Rio, we believe transitioning to a circular economy is an imperative part of tackling the climate crisis. However, the importance of a circular economy can often be overlooked in business and organisational strategies.

It's true that net zero is fundamental, and we hope you’re on your net zero journey or about to embark on it (if you need a hand, we have a ten step to net zero guide), but here we’ll explore why circularity shouldn’t be left behind.

There hasn’t been a huge ‘fanfare’ about it, but we feel this milestone should be celebrated, particularly as it was nearly an opportunity missed through continued delays from the negotiating down of key recycling targets and Brexit.

Back to Basics

On the 6th - 7th of November I attended Ecomondo, the Green Technology Expo, located near the seaside town of Rimni, Italy. Think differently, the now infamous advertising campaign produced by Apple between 1997 and 2002 highlighted that people who see things differently change things:

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

Five things you need to know about the Resources and Waste Strategy Consultations

On the 18th February the Government published a series of documents asking for the public views on key areas of waste management. Resident expert David Newman has compiled the top five things you need to know from the consultations. You can find out more and have your say by visiting the Gov.uk

*As many powers are already devolved to Scotland and Wales, these consultations mainly concern England.

Smoke and Mirrors

Smoke and Mirrors

I was recently asked to present at the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management (formerly BIFM) AGM about the plastic’s ‘crisis’.  A subject that I had written about for World Environment day last year. In the article, I called on organisations to really think about, and investigate what happens to their wastes, rather than implementing a ‘quick fix’ solution that could do more harm than good.
