#1 Step to Protect Against Identity Theft – From an ERP Security Expert

At ERP Risk Advisors, ERP security and controls are our core business. We specialize in helping organizations secure their ERP systems and avoid costly breaches. But today, I want to speak to you not as a professional, but as an individual who understands how vulnerable we all are to identity theft in today’s cyber landscape.

Every day, we see firsthand the aftermath of data breaches—exposing everything from login credentials to sensitive personally identifiable information (PII) like Social Security numbers and birthdates. These breaches aren’t just corporate issues. They can—and often do—lead to identity theft, targeting people like you and me.

Take this TransUnion data breach, for example. It’s one of the most alarming recent incidents, compromising the Social Security numbers and birthdates of over 4.4 million individuals.

It used to be that when your data was exposed in a breach, the company responsible would at least offer free identity theft monitoring for a year. Now, breaches are so common that most companies barely issue an apology—let alone provide support services.

As much as it pains me to say this, identity theft protection has become a personal responsibility. We no longer have the luxury of assuming someone else will cover the risk for us.

While there are many tools and services available for monitoring identity theft, I want to highlight a far more effective—and free—approach: freezing your credit.

Why Freezing Your Credit Is a Must

I personally use Experian’s free credit freeze service, and I keep my credit permanently frozen, only unfreezing it briefly when I apply for something like a new credit card.

A credit freeze does the following:

  • Prevents new credit accounts (loans, credit cards, etc.) from being opened in your name without your approval.
  • Protects against unauthorized access to your credit report.
  • Reduces the risk of fraudulent activity tied to your identity.

This single step is one of the strongest defenses against identity theft—far more effective than just monitoring for suspicious activity after the damage is done.

Protect Your Family Too

If you’re a parent, consider freezing the credit of your children. Children are often targeted for identity theft because their credit histories are clean—and often go unchecked for years.

You should also talk to your adult children and especially your elderly parents about freezing their credit. Seniors are unfortunately high-risk targets for scams and fraudulent activity, and a credit freeze can be a powerful preventive tool.

Take Action Today

As experts in ERP security, we help organizations protect massive systems. But your personal data security starts with you.

We don’t endorse any specific identity theft monitoring service, but we strongly encourage you to take control with a free credit freeze. It’s quick, easy, and one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your loved ones from identity theft.
