Settlement Council of Australia launched the Stories of Multicultural Australia Project during Harmony Week in March 2022. With more than 40 participants from across Australia, this project is training the next generation of diverse storytellers for media commentary and helping them shape the conversation on multicultural affairs in Australian news media.
Navitas Skilled Futures has long recognised the need to embed digital skills as part of delivery, but this also requires teachers who feel confident and capable of integrating educational technology into their lessons. Teachers everywhere recognise that by empowering learners to be competent digital users and consumers they will become more independent and better problem solvers. However, what if teachers themselves do not feel they have the necessary skills?
CMRC, in partnership with Macquarie Community College, designed the Digital Literacy Program to provide digital literacy skills to members of the Armenian Community, all of whom are refugees, so they could become better connected with the wider community. The program learning outcomes include using a digital device, sending emails, using Facebook and other social media platforms, online shopping and banking, online safety and security, using myGov and Centrelink, and general access to online information.
The MoneyGirl course is an evidence-based financial education program designed especially for young people in Australia, with a focus on young women from migrant and refugee backgrounds. The program consists of 6 workshops, and each workshop covers one topic that will become a key building block in their path to financial independence.
Allianz Australia and SSI’s award-winning partnership has been delivering new education and career opportunities for refugees and migrants since 2016. It is a holistic partnership, with co-designed programs across a wide range of activities that also directly engages and connects hundreds of Allianz staff with the settlement journey.
Football Victoria and Melbourne Polytechnic worked together to provide accessible football/soccer programs for young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds to support their learning and physical and mental wellbeing.
The Settlement Council of Australia (SCoA) welcomes the opportunity to provide input into this inquiry. SCoA is the peak body representing the vast majority of settlement agencies across Australia providing direct services and support to people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Our members include organisations large and small, who are committed to the successful settlement of migrants and refugees across the country. Their services range from greeting new arrivals at the airport, through to assisting them to secure housing, learn English, make social connections, access services and find their first job.
Queensland’s newest migrants and refugees turned to TAFE Queensland for critical online support during the COVID-19 pandemic. As restrictions were introduced, TAFE QLD’s English Language and Literacy Services quickly activated plans for the remote delivery of the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP).
