Password Security: Avoid These Top Worst Passwords of 2023

In the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity, one critical aspect that demands unwavering attention is password security. The significance of strong passwords cannot be overstated, as they serve as the frontline defence against unauthorised access and potential data breaches. At Arc Systems, we are committed to empowering individuals and organisations with the knowledge and tools they need to safeguard their sensitive information. This comprehensive guide will explore the worst passwords of 2023, analyse the importance of password security, and provide actionable steps to fortify your digital defences.

The Worst Passwords of 2023

Before we delve into the intricacies of password security, let’s address the elephant in the room—the worst passwords of 2023. These alarming combinations of characters, while shocking in their simplicity, continue to be prevalent and pose significant risks to individuals and businesses alike. Some of the worst passwords include:

Understanding the Importance of Password Security

Password security is a cornerstone of robust cybersecurity practices. It forms a crucial element in the defence mechanism that protects your sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands. The prevalence of sophisticated hacking technologies underscores the urgency of strengthening password security. Surprisingly, even seemingly complex passwords, such as ‘!”#$%^&*’, are not safe from the advanced algorithms employed by cybercriminals.

The Impact of Weak Passwords

A weak password is akin to leaving your front door wide open to intruders. It takes mere minutes for hackers to crack weak passwords and gain unauthorised access to your accounts. Astonishingly, some passwords can be broken in a matter of seconds. The consequences of a compromised account can be devastating, ranging from identity theft to financial loss and reputational damage.

Enhancing Your Password Security

At Arc Systems, we are passionate about empowering individuals and organisations to enhance their password security and protect what matters most. Here are some proactive steps you can take to fortify your digital defences:

1. Embrace Passphrases and Acronyms

Instead of relying on simple passwords, opt for passphrases or acronyms that are easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Combinations of random words or initials from a memorable phrase can create formidable passwords.

2. Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

Implementing MFA adds an extra layer of security, making it significantly harder for unauthorised individuals to access your accounts. This two-factor authentication method requires users to provide two or more forms of identification before granting access.

3. Stay Away from Common Words and Sequences

Avoid using easily guessable words, such as “password” or sequences like “12345.” Instead, opt for a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters to bolster your password’s complexity.

4. Regular Password Updates

Make it a habit to change your passwords regularly. This practice minimises the risk of prolonged unauthorised access, even if your password is compromised.

5. Password Managers

Consider using a reliable password manager to securely store and manage your passwords. These tools offer encryption and simplify the process of creating and updating passwords across various platforms.

Microsoft End of Life Products: Are You Ready?

Microsoft End of Life Products: Are You Ready?

Microsoft will officially end its support for a number of their products on 14th January 2020. Though it may seem like a far-off date, updating IT infrastructure is significant. Not planning for Microsoft end of life products can leave IT  infrastructure unprotected and vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

Today, Arc Systems are reminding their customers about this important date and advising them to put plans in place NOW for a smooth transition to make sure your company is seamlessly protected during this changeover and your infrastructure remains secure.

So do you or your business operate any of the following Microsoft end of life products?

•  Windows 7 – One of Microsoft’s best-loved computing operating systems, with almost 40% of users still using it. However, like all operating systems before it, Windows 7 will eventually reach the end of its lifecycle, making an upgrade an essential task for the safety of your PC.

•  Microsoft Exchange 2010 – Exchange Server 2010 will also reach the end of support offered by Microsoft in January 2020. If you haven’t already begun your migration from Exchange 2010 to Office 365 or Exchange 2016, now’s the time to start your planning.

•  Windows Server 2008 & 2008 R2 – Support for Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 will also end, which means the end of regular security updates. Don’t let your infrastructure and applications go unprotected. Arc Systems will be here to help you migrate to current versions for greater security, performance and innovation.

•  Windows SBS 2011 – Finally, Windows Small Business Server 2011 is being phased out by Microsoft. Arc Systems can offer you the support needed in moving your business either to the latest Microsoft Exchange, Cloud Desktop and Office 365 and now is the time to start your migration planning.

Microsoft manages the support for their products through its well established Life Cycle Policy. Generally, a product has Mainstream Support for five years after release and then moves to Extended Support for a further five years, with all support ending ten years after the release date.

When a server reaches the end of life and is no longer supported, Microsoft will no longer offer any type of support for the operating system which means:

•  No security files are released and security gaps will no longer be plugged by software updates. This leaves the system vulnerable to security threats and will put your business data and networks at risk.

•  No new features will be released and you will eventually start to miss out on new features which will impact on the productivity of your business. The new virtualisation features introduced in Hyper-V on the updated Winders Server 2012 and R2 systems alone may warrant an upgrade.

•  You could also find that you are no longer complying with regulatory standards which require all IT products to be supported.

What does this mean for you and what should you do now?

It is now worth speaking to our expert advisors who can now begin the early stages of a migration strategy. A large number of businesses will need to replace servers by the deadline and this task requires a great deal of investigation and planning to minimise downtime during the process.

We will be encouraging all our customers, who are affected by these changes, to begin to think about this process over the coming months, but why don’t you contact us today for a chat about how we can help your company plan a well-managed and timely transition?
