Northern Settlement Services – Talking Around the World

The Talking Around The World program, starting in 2016, offers free weekly conversation classes that focus on discussions and information in line with the National Settlement Outcome Standards (NSOS). Community Refugee Sponsorship Initiative (CRSI)

In 2020 CRSI initiated, led and coordinated the implementation of a pilot ‘Group Mentorship’ program along with a range of collaborating organisations. The program aimed to harness the energies of local community groups to provide self-directed and holistic support for refugee households who arrived in Australia prior to the pandemic drawing on key features of Canada’s successful and long-standing community sponsorship program for refugees.

The Settlement Council of Australia (SCoA) welcomes the opportunity to provide input into this inquiry. SCoA is the peak body representing the vast majority of settlement agencies across Australia providing direct services and support to people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Our members include organisations large and small, who are committed to the successful settlement of migrants and refugees across the country. Their services range from greeting new arrivals at the airport, through to assisting them to secure housing, learn English, make social connections, access services and find their first job.
