First Taste Of Baseball

Blog_Header.jpg

Back home in my own native Belfast, baseball is more or less a non existent sport in terms of practice. However, everyone there will know what it is and the basics of how it works. This is probably because it is often broadcast on television, either live or in association with some popular televised series. However, very few people I know have had the luxury of actually being in attendance of a live game, I had this privilege last Friday when I found myself at Yankee Stadium to watch the Yankees face off against the Seattle Mariners. Obviously it would be impossible for any sport to take precedent for me over football (soccer to you!), but my experience of baseball at Yankee Stadium was nothing short of pleasant! The atmosphere alone was excellent, and hooliganism is entirely non-existent which of course adds a more sporting touch to the game. I even managed to catch up with the rules rather fast and was able to get the full benefit of my seats in the highest point available where I could see everything and did not miss a trick! For me baseball was a refreshing experience, one which I hope to experience again!

Project FIND a cat...

Blog_Header.jpg

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting two of perhaps the most elusive residents at Project FIND. Residing in the basement of Hargrave House live a pair of female feline companions cared for by the building's superintendent. I first came across them last week when I was emptying my recyclables and rubbish. I found one to be rather shy, whilst the other to be quite outgoing for a cat. Upon asking the superintendent their names I was humored to discover that one was called 'Project' and the other called 'Find'! The superintendent explained this to me, stating that because Project FIND looks after the upkeep of the pair he named them accordingly in recognition of the organisation. Indeed, ever since they were given a home by Project FIND the Hargrave sisters have become a familiar part of daily life for the residents at Hargrave House who frequently use the basement floor for tasks such as washing, drying and recycling. 'Project', the dark furred cat shown below on the right appears to be the more vocal of the two and seems much more trusting of people than her sister 'Find' who is shown on the left. So far she has shown herself to be a much more timid kitty! To me the duo represent one of many small and hidden yet charming aspects of Project FIND, the sort of aspects I aim to include more of in this blog.

An afternoon at the Ticker Tape Parade!

Blog_Header.jpg

On the 5th of July the USA's women's soccer team lifted their third world cup title after a dramatic 5-2 victory over Japan in Vancouver. The final was watched by over 25 million viewers and included a sensational hat trick by number 10 Carli Lloyd! In my native Belfast, soccer (or football as we call it) is incredibly popular and the favorite sport of most in my experience. Therefore, I found it an exciting privilege to be present at the Ticker Tape parade in New York City which took place in honor of the hard fought triumph by the USA. The city has not hosted a parade to honor a team of national athletes since the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. Below is a short collection of my own snapshots of the event in lower Manhattan.
