There is no shortage of articles and blogs about Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). Unfortunately, too much of the information is inaccurate, not substantiated by quality research studies or misleading to get you to purchase a supplement or probiotic treatment. This article is an exception and is a worthwhile read for anyone concerned about SIBO.
It is well known that people who have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease should avoid foods containing gluten. It maybe that even people who have not been diagnosed with Celiac Disease should consider restricting their consumption of gluten. A break though study has just been published that shows a strong correlation between people found to have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and coronary artery disease (CAD). In this study, 1,059 patients were tested using the glucose hydrogen/methane breath test for the presence of SIBO. Positive SIBO patients were compared to SIBO negative patients. SIBO positive patients had a significantly higher incidence of CAD as well as a higher incidence of diabetes and chronic kidney disease. The researcher’s conclusion is that patients that test positive for SIBO should consider further assessment for CAD. The evidence also suggests that indentifying SIBO and subsequently treating and eradicating the bacterial might help people avoid a CAD problem down the road. Metabolic Solutions offers the home based glucose hydrogen/methane test for $129.00. Check out the link below to the published paper and order your test.
The most common eradication treatment for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a course of the antibiotic rifaximin. However for many people this is a problem because they either are not working with a doctor or have an adversion to taking a pharmaceutical antibiotic. Below is a link to a great article about treating small intestinal bacterial overgrowth using herbal therapies. Most interesting, this research shows that the herbal therapies can have efficacy equivalence to a pharmaceutical antibiotic. This suggests that consumers can take a hydrogen breath test offered by our laboratory and successfully pursue a treatment strategy at a very low cost and without ever involving a doctor.
A recent study was conducted to exam the prevalence of SIBO in obesity. Thirty (30) participants with suspected SIBO underwent lactulose hydrogen breath tests and wireless motility capsule (WMC). The results were that SIBO was more frequent among obese patients vs non-obese patients (88.9% vs 42.9%, P < .05). In conclusion, overweight patients suffering from stomach area discomfort (ie. bloating, flatulence, weakness etc.) should consider getting tested for SIBO.
Lactose intolerance and milk allergy are two very different problems that are often confused and thought of as the same issue. Lactose intolerance is simply a deficiency in producing the enzyme lactase. The condition is relatively benign, the severity can vary and there are treatment options such as lactaid. A milk allergy is a much more serious problem and could even be life threatening. The lactose intolerance hydrogen breath test offered by Metabolic Solutions can be used to differentiate between intolerance and allergy. The attached article is an excellent summary of differences between the two conditions, what actions to take to determine which one you want have, and actions to take.
Great article that reviews the prevalence of SIBO and discusses the value of using the hydrogen breath test to detect SIBO, and the importance of testing for both hydrogen and methane gas. Full text of article available for free.
This study conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review of current evidence to assess the efficacy of probiotics in preventing or treating small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). The conclusion was that probiotics supplementation could effectively decontaminate SIBO, decrease H2 concentration, and relieve abdominal pain, but were ineffective in preventing SIBO. To get the described benefits it is important to purchase high quality probiotics with active cultures.
