Evolution — ‘The Force’ That Is With Us

There is a force in the universe that empowers and guides us to meet the challenges of our time. This force is not one of the known physical forces, a push-pull kinetic-energy force. It is a subtle impetus, an almost spiritual leaning or tendency. In the language of the life sciences, it can be called “a tropism,” an attraction toward particular resources or conditions. In the context of the systems sciences, it is an “attractor.” Attractors are conceptual tools for measuring the state of a complex system, assessing the configuration of the forces that maintain it in a steady or in a dynamically evolving state.

People throughout history and across all cultures have believed in some sort of afterlife — and there is a significant amount of scientific evidence that supports this belief. Our team at IONS recently submitted a paper on the survival of human consciousness after death to an essay contest hosted by the Bigelow Institute for Conscious Studies (BICS). We are pleased to announce that we were one of 29 winners of the contest, which saw a total of 205 essay submissions from over 1000 initial applicants.
