This month’s post in our IONS50 Blog Series is by Paul Nathaniel Temple Jr. Cofounder of IONS in 1973, Paul was a close friend and visionary partner of IONS founder Edgar Mitchell. In 1989, he and wife Diane Temple, who served IONS alongside Paul, established the Temple Awards for Creative Altruism at IONS, given to uncelebrated champions of humanity who exemplified unselfish service motivated by love.
Is Upsight Vision a psychic ability? That’s one of the many questions I get asked when I’m on podcast interviews. After I tell my backstory, which typically goes something like this. Before I lost my mind, I was a successful marketing executive, business owner, husband and father in Atlanta, Georgia. I had it all, and I lost it all; I monumentally screwed up my whole life due to cocaine addiction. My addiction led to mental illness that eventually landed me in a psychiatric hospital and ultimately left me homeless. For two years I was “lost,” literally and figuratively. I believed insane things. Really believed them. For a while, I even thought I was Jesus. I’m not. Which is probably best for everybody.

One of the traditional English phrases for the subtle energy of emotions is still popular: “the excitement in the air.” Many people use this phrase when referring to how it feels to attend a sporting event or a large musical concert, yet we don’t usually analyze what that “excitement in the air” actually consists of, or whether it is a real construct, and not “just” a subjective experience.
