Pumpkin presented for bruising after a bath. Blood work revealed an extremely low platelet count and further evaluation is consistent with a condition known as immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP). With this condition, the body starts attacking and destroying the platelets causing an inability to clot properly.
Pumpkin was hospitalized and started on medications to help stop the body from attacking itself. Not all animals respond well to treatment, but after 4 nights in our hospital, Pumpkin’s platelet counts increased to the normal range.
She has been sent home and can be with her parents and sister, Malibu, again! Over the next few months, she will be slowly tapered off of the medication and blood tests will be repeated periodically to monitor her levels.
