Anny was transferred to our cardiologist to evaluate a cough, worsening respiratory effort, and episodes of collapsing. After an echocardiogram, Anny was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension describes elevated arterial pressure within the blood vessels connecting the heart and lungs, which in Anny’s case resulted in her collapsing. Pulmonary hypertension is most common in smaller, middle-aged to older dogs, and is also more common at high altitude. Anny was hospitalized for 24 hours to receive oxygen, medications, and be monitored. She didn’t have any more episodes of collapsing overnight and was able to go home with her family.
