Report: How Congestion Pricing Impacts PA Commuters
New Analysis Highlights Rising Costs for Northeast PA Drivers Heading to NYC
WILKES-BARRE, PA (Date) – A new report from Martz Bus,The True Cost of Driving to NYC: How Congestion Pricing Impacts PA Commuters, reveals the financial strain placed on commuters from Northeastern Pennsylvania in the wake of New York City’s new congestion pricing program. According to the report, driving from communities like Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, and Mount Pocono to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan now costs an average of $64 per day.
The congestion pricing program, which took effect January 5, imposes a $9 toll on vehicles entering Manhattan’s Central Business District, south of 60th Street. Combined with other commuting costs—including tunnel tolls, bridge tolls, parking fees, and fuel—this new tax has raised the daily cost of driving to Manhattan by approximately 16%.
“This increase is catching many drivers off guard, especially since the toll is collected electronically and may not be immediately visible until reviewing a credit card or E-Z Pass statement,” said Bob Chepalonis, General Manager of Martz Bus.
The breakdown of daily commuting costs for drivers traveling from the Delaware Water Gap to Manhattan includes:
- Lincoln Tunnel Toll: $15.38
- Congestion Pricing Tax: $9.00
- Delaware Water Gap Bridge Toll: $1.50
- Parking in Manhattan: $19.00
- Fuel Costs: $19.28
- Total Daily Cost: $64.16
For comparison, Martz Bus passengers traveling the same route pay approximately $37 per day, a savings of at least $27 daily. Passengers can also benefit from reduced stress, the ability to catch up on work or rest during the trip, and avoiding wear and tear on their personal vehicles.
“We’re seeing more commuters exploring alternative ways to travel due to rising costs,” said Chepalonis. “For many, taking the bus isn’t just a financial decision—it’s a way to make the most of their commute.”
Martz Bus operates 18 daily trips to New York City, serving commuters across Northeastern Pennsylvania, including the Poconos, Luzerne, and Lackawanna counties. The report highlights how congestion pricing has further widened the cost gap between driving and other transit options, underscoring the need for commuters to weigh all available choices.
Northeastern Pennsylvania drivers now spend an average of $64 per day commuting to Manhattan, with New York City’s new congestion pricing tax contributing to a 16% increase in costs.
