Prep Your Home for a Window Install: A Homeowner’s Guide
You’ve picked out your new windows. That’s exciting. But before installation day arrives, there’s one more step that makes a big difference: getting your home ready.
At Southwest Exteriors, we’ve been replacing windows in San Antonio for more than 30 years. One thing we’ve learned is that a little preparation on the front end makes everything smoother. Less stress, fewer surprises, and a cleaner, faster window installation.
Here’s what you should know and how to prep your home so installation day feels easy.

Why Prep Matters
Window replacement isn’t just swapping out glass. It’s a construction project. That means tools, ladders, dust, and people moving in and out of your house.
When you and your home are prepared, everything runs smoother. The crew can work faster, your belongings stay protected, and you get to enjoy the big reveal without any added stress.
Think of it like setting the stage before a concert. If the stage is clear and everything’s in place, the show runs a whole lot better.
Step 1: Clear the Area Around Each Window
Our team needs space to work around every window on the inside of your home. That means pulling furniture a few feet back, taking down curtains or blinds, and clearing off your window sills.
And if you’ve got something heavy you don’t want to move alone, don’t stress. Let us know and we’ll give you a hand on install day.
Step 2: Protect Fragile Items
If you have keepsakes or breakables near your windows or hanging on the walls, it’s best to move them somewhere safe for the day. Window installation involves tools and movement that can cause vibrations, and the last thing you want is a picture frame or vase taking a tumble. Tuck those items into another room, and you can enjoy the process without worrying about your favorite things.
Step 3: Make Sure We Can Get to the Outside

Our crews needs a clear path outside your windows to set up safety and work efficiently. That might mean sliding patio furniture out of the way, rolling your grill to the side, or relocating a few potted plants.
Here’s why it matters: during installation, we follow a very systematic approach. Only a few windows areout at once, and our team keeps each opening exposed for just a short time. The easier it is for us to set up outside, the smoother and faster we can move through your project — and the quicker your home gets sealed back up.
But What About the Landscaping?
We’ll always do our best to work carefully around your landscaping. But because we use ladders, tools, and need direct access to each window, we can’t always guarantee that plants or shrubs right up against the house won’t get bumped or stressed. If you have something delicate you want to protect, it’s a good idea to move it ahead of time or let us know so we can help come up with a plan.
When the outside is ready, it’s like clearing the runway for takeoff, then we can focus on a smooth, precise install without delays
Step 4: Think About Pets and Kids

Install days can be noisy and busy. Doors open and close a lot. If you have pets or young kids, consider giving them a comfy space away from the action. Some families even make it a day for a playdate or a long walk. It keeps everyone safe and less stressed.
Step 5: Security and Alarms
If you have security sensors on your current windows, those will need to come off during installation. Here’s the important part: our crews don’t reinstall alarm systems. That’s because only your alarm company is licensed to reconnect and test them properly.
Here’s how it works:
During installation, our team will carefully disconnect the sensors and, when possible, leave small “pigtail” wires accessible. This makes it easier for your alarm company to come back and reattach the sensors without extra hassle.
You’ll then want to schedule your alarm company to come out shortly after your install, usually within a couple of days. That way, your windows are secure, the caulking and sealants have time to cure, and the alarm pros can do their job right.
Why does this matter?
If alarms are reattached incorrectly, they may not work when you really need them. By working with your alarm company, you’re protecting your home and making sure your system stays under warranty.
By letting us handle the install and your alarm company handle the security, you get the best of both worlds: a flawless fit and a fully protected home.
Step 6: Expect a Little Dust
We’ll do everything we can to keep your home clean during installation, that means floors will be covered, drop cloths will be laid, and our crews will vacuum as they go. Cleanliness is one of the things we pride ourselves on.
That said, we like to set realistic expectations. When cutting into walls and moving big old windows, some dust is inevitable. Even with our best efforts, you might notice a light layer settling for a day or two afterward.
Think of it like baking cookies, no matter how careful you are, you’ll still find a little flour on the counter later. Same thing here, only with drywall dust instead of cookie bits.
If you want to go the extra mile, throwing a sheet over your couch or moving electronics a bit further back isn’t a bad idea. And don’t worry, we’ll leave the space better than we found it, just with windows that work a whole lot better than before.
What Happens on Installation Day

Here’s what you can expect when our crew arrives.

 - Before we leave, we’ll walk you through the finished work and answer your questions.

Window Installation Day FAQs
Clear answers to the most common questions about preparing your home for a window installation.
Do I need to be home during the installation?
You don’t have to be home for the entire installation, but we do recommend being available at the start and the end of the day. That way you can connect with your project manager, make sure the crew has what they need, and confirm your home is locked and secure when the work is finished. If you can’t be there, just coordinate with your project manager ahead of time so everything is handled exactly how you’d like.
How long does a typical window installation take?
It depends on the size of your project. A few windows may take half a day, while a whole-home replacement can take a couple of days. Your Design Consultant and Project Manager will be able to provide you a clear timeline for installation.
Will there be a lot of dust or mess?
Our crews use drop cloths, floor protection, and clean as they go, but some dust is inevitable when removing old windows. A quick wipe-down after install is usually all that’s needed.
Do I need to move my furniture before the crew arrives?
We recommend moving small items and fragile belongings away from the windows. If you have heavy furniture, let our crew know, we’ll be happy to help with the big stuff.
What about my window coverings and alarms?
Curtains, blinds, and shades should be removed before the crew arrives. If your windows have security sensors, they’ll need to come off during installation. We’ll coordinate with you, but your alarm company will need to reinstall them after your project is complete.
How can I prepare my landscaping before installation?
Clearing patio furniture, grills, and plants near your windows helps our crews work safely and efficiently. We’ll always do our best around your landscaping, but delicate plants close to the house may be at risk of getting bumped during setup.
