Break Free to Move Forward

Break Free to Move Forward

The Silent Struggle of Feeling Stuck

Everyone faces a moment when they hit a plateau, when progress feels impossible. The overall goals are clear, and the vision is motivating. Yet, the path forward seems to have a roadblock. The sense of being “stuck” isn’t just frustrating, but it also decreases confidence, stalls ideas, and can impact the team's morale. This feeling doesn’t have to be permanent; we can use it as a sign to pause, reflect, and recalibrate.

After graduating college, I found myself feeling stuck. I had just earned my degree and watched my friends land their first “adult” jobs, while I accepted a retail position. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the steps I took to get where I am today, but I couldn’t shake that sense of being stuck. I kept applying to jobs and rarely made it past the initial stages. Eventually, I took some time to reflect on what I wanted my career to look like, took a short break, and then put myself back out there.

Most of us have a similar story. While our timing and circumstances may differ, we’ve all experienced feeling stuck at some point.

Don’t let impressive titles fool you, leaders feel stuck, too. Leadership is a high-pressure role, with the expectation of making decisions, inspiring others, and delivering results. Even the most seasoned leaders encounter roadblocks. Common causes include:

  • Decision fatigue: Constantly having to make decisions can drain our mental energy.

  • Fear of Failure: Worrying about the risks too often can lead to paralysis.

  • Overwhelm: Taking on too much can create confusion when we have too many priorities.

  • Lack of clarity: When the “why” behind our actions fades, it becomes a hindrance to motivation.

The first step to overcoming the roadblock may be to recognize these issues sooner, before it’s too late.

To remain in the state of feeling stuck has much larger consequences than our own personal frustrations. We might see that our organizational growth starts to slow down, those around us begin to feel tense and have less of a desire to engage, the culture may begin to be filled with hesitation rather than taking action.

There are many ways to overcome the feeling of being stuck. The first step is to reflect on what you are feeling and what may be causing that feeling. It is then essential to take intentional action. We can all say what needs to improve, but it’s about what we do to improve. Here are a handful of strategies that could work to help you improve:

Shifting Our Perspective: Feeling stuck can often come from focusing on what’s not working. Try to flip the lens.

  1. Remind yourself of what you are in control of.
  2. Don’t think of challenges as a problem, rethink them as an opportunity to learn.
  3. Make sure to remind yourself of the progress you have made. It’s okay to have self-gratification.

Remind Yourself “Why”: Feeling a sense of purpose can refuel momentum. Losing sight of why you lead can cause the journey to feel clouded.

  1. Reflect on your core values, what makes you uniquely you.
  2. Revisit your vision - does it still excite you, does it encourage you to keep going, or does it feel daunting?
  3. Align your daily goals with the long-term goals.

Break it Down: Don’t look at the big goals and feel overwhelmed; break them down into simplified parts.

  1. What is one part of the goal that you could accomplish now and take action on?
  2. Focus on three priorities at a time, implementing the “rule of three”.
  3. Celebrate the micro-wins, no matter how small, if you feel that you have accomplished something, celebrate.

Seek Outside Perspective: Engage with others, ask for their perspectives or advice, as isolation can amplify the feeling of being stuck.

  1. Reach out to a mentor or a coach. Having an unbiased opinion can help to think of a solution from a different direction.
  2. Don’t fear feedback. Yes, feedback can be harsh at times, but it’s only helping our growth.
  3. Join a leadership community or a group related to your passions and interests. The Impact of Leadership is a great group to join for valuable insights from real conversations on the topic.

Embrace the unknown and experimentation: To desire perfection is a trap, as no one is perfect.

  1. Take a risk, try something new without the hesitation of fear for failure.
  2. If you experience a setback, don’t let it derail you; use it as data, not as a defeat.
  3. Encourage those around you to have curiosity. Great things can come from wanting to know more, looking at new ideas, and researching current trends.

Ultimately, overcoming the feeling of being stuck isn’t about forcing progress, it’s about creating space to have clarity and courage. Those who strive to see challenges as stepping stones, not a mountain to climb. They understand that movement in the right direction starts with the right mindset.
