Derivita Power User Stories: Building A Strong RTI Process

Our Marketing Director, Arianna Irwin, recently had the opportunity to speak with Teann Russ, a Math Teacher and the leader of the new RTI process at Norman North High School in Oklahoma. When Teann first heard about Derivita, she wasn’t convinced. “I just thought this is just another program, just something else that they’re throwing out there”.

Like many educators, she had seen countless tools come and go. But what started as a mandatory training turned into a key piece of an innovative RTI (Response to Intervention) model that dramatically improved student engagement and outcomes.

Implementing a New Strategy

The turning point came in 2023 after a particularly tough year. “I was very down in May because of the lack of retention that my students were showing,” Teann recalled. Determined to make a change, she spent the summer designing an Algebra 1 classroom RTI process—with the Derivita platform as the technological center.

Teann's strategy was all about retention and followed these simple steps:

Teach new content Monday through Thursday.
Assess the new content with a short quiz on Friday.
Utilize Monday's classroom time for targeted group instruction based on the quiz results.
Offer students an opportunity to retake the quiz throughout the following week.

On Monday's, based on Friday’s quiz performance, students are assigned to one of three RTI rooms for the first half of the class period:

Enrichment
Reteach
Retake

Instructors then utilize the rest of that Monday class period for their regular classroom instruction.

“Derivita was ideal for this situation,” she said. “Because the retake… looked different every time, kids couldn’t just memorize answers—they had to understand the material.”

While Derivita was essential to this new RTI process, it also helped shift classroom culture. Students began supporting each other through meaningful conversations and changing how they saw math education as a whole.

“Instead of saying, ‘Hey, what’d you get for number two?’ their questions changed to, ‘Hey, how did you do number two?’”

The Results

The results spoke for themselves.

“From year to year, we saw an average growth of around 10%. And for Unit 5—systems of equations—we had a significant increase,” Teann said. Even more impactful was the shift in the staff and PLC culture;

The previous year we were algebra one teachers, and now we’re an algebra one team.”

Student attitudes towards math seem to have improved as well, but Derivita can't take all the credit for this shift. This is also thanks to Teann’s high-energy approach and showing up to the classroom with a positive attitude;

“I’m in the hallways screaming, ‘Let’s ace this test!’” she said. “If it at least puts a smile on your face, then I win.”

Teann now sees Derivita as essential to effective hybrid learning.

“It’s a good immersion of both [paper and digital]. I can have the kids show their work on paper and submit a picture on Derivita. It’s seamless… In my opinion, Derivita is worth it and every school should have it.”

Her advice to others?

“You won’t know unless you take it and implement it.” After four years of evolving her practice, Teann says it best: “It’s a great program, and I hope we never lose it.”

In April, our Marketing Director, Arianna Irwin, had the opportunity to speak with Rachel Marshall, Canyons School District's Middle School Math Specialist. When Rachel Marshall, Middle School Math Specialist for Utah’s Canyons School District, first encountered Derivita during a virtual Utah conference in the early days of the pandemic, she knew it could solve a major issue her staff and students faced: teaching and learning math in the Canvas LMS.

About Canyons School District

Canyons School District is a newer, mid-size district in Sandy, Utah. Canyons was founded in 2009 and currently serves eight diverse middle schools with students from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Initial Problem

“Math in Canvas was the problem,” Rachel recalled. “Parents were complaining that right answers were being marked wrong because Canvas didn’t recognize '2.0' and the answer should have been '2.'.. We saw that Derivita was recognizing that. The teachers really loved it.”

Since then, Derivita has become a core part of the district’s instructional approach, especially thanks to its immediate feedback for students.

“They [Parents] didn’t know how to help their students at home, and they didn’t know if their students got the right answer,” Rachel explained. “Now they’re [the students] getting that feedback… and they know—I got it wrong, I know what I need to do, I can try again.”

Introducing a New EdTech Tool District-Wide

Rachel emphasized that rolling out a new tool districtwide takes thoughtful planning. She used regular district collaboration days to introduce Derivita and leaned on required common assessments to ensure consistent usage. “

Even if they didn’t use it for anything else except that, then they realized—wait a minute, I actually kind of like this.”

Another way Rachel has been able to encourage usage throughout her middle schools is to point her teaching staff towards Derivita’s Analytics. This access to real-time data has helped establish Canyons' professional learning communities (PLCs) into powerful, data-driven collaboration hubs.

“They’re having conversations like, ‘Your kids did better on number seven than my kids. Why?’… That’s been a really powerful tool to model what a PLC should really look like.”

Some Parting Advice

Her advice to others rolling out new EdTech tools: “Find something in common that they all can use... Whether it’s once a month or once a quarter, that kind of forces them into it—and then they can see how to use it in a lower-stakes environment.”

“At first, students thought it was harder because they couldn’t check answers with their neighbors,” she recalls. “But as they got used to it, they realized how much they appreciated knowing immediately whether they were on the right track.”

For educators hesitant to try something new, she offers this advice:

“If you've been teaching the same way for 20 years, that doesn’t mean you should still be doing it the same way. Be open to change—it might not be perfect your first time, but it’s worth it.”

Jacob Whetman, a passionate math teacher at Utah Online School, has spent over a decade shaping the math experiences of students across the state. Now, Whetman focuses on guiding high school students, from sophomore to junior level, through their math journey. Since joining Utah Online School ten years ago, Whetman has witnessed the school’s rapid growth—from just a few hundred students to nearly 4,000 today.

First Impressions

Whetman first encountered Derivita about five years ago, and he was immediately impressed by the platform’s potential. "We were looking for a curriculum that could meet the diverse needs of our students, and Derivita stood out," he recalls. What course do you teach/use Derivita with?
I teach Algebra and use Derivita mainly for practice assignments.

What year did you first start using Derivita?
I started using Derivita about five years ago after learning about it through a CCSD pre-planning workshop.

What made you decide to start using Derivita?
I decided to use Derivita because it provides students with immediate feedback, allowing them to correct their missed questions and even offers similar problems if necessary.

How many students are using Derivita now?
Currently, I use Derivita with all of my students in all of my classes.

What does a typical school day look like for you?
A typical school day starts with direct instruction to introduce the topic, followed by either a group activity or individual practice with Derivita.

How are you incorporating Derivita into your day-to-day instruction?
I incorporate Derivita by assigning practice problems during lessons, allowing students to work through problems at their own pace, and using it for homework assignments.

Have you seen any positive or negative impacts that Derivita has had in your classroom?
I’ve seen positive impacts such as improved student engagement and understanding of concepts. The immediate feedback on whether students got the question right or wrong allows them to attempt the question again. This ensures that they keep trying and receive individual help until they've mastered the standard.

What do your students think of Derivita?
My students appreciate Derivita for its interactive nature and the immediate feedback it provides, which helps them feel more confident in their learning.

What is your favorite feature of Derivita?
My favorite feature is the immediate feedback system, as it enables students to learn from their mistakes right away.

I have been teaching for 13 years—7 years in Georgia and the past 5 years at Wando High School in Charleston.

My favorite part about the teaching and learning process is witnessing students' growth and understanding as they engage with the material. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their "aha" moments and how their confidence develops over time.

Derivita Power User Stories: More Than Math

Our Marketing Director, Arianna Irwin, recently sat down with Secondary (6-12) Math Instructional District Specialist - Jason Aldridge from Charleston County School District (CCSD) to hear about his Derivita journey over the last three years.

Derivita’s 6-12 Math Courseware solution was initially implemented in 2021 at CCSD in conjunction with the Illustrative Mathematics Curriculum (IM) in all of their Algebra 1 classes.

In the 2022-2023 school year, CCSD expanded its partnership with Derivita to utilize the platform for their Common Assessments and Benchmarks in the other three (3) main core subject areas; ELA, Social Studies, and Science.

More than just math

After a few years with a different assessment partner, it was time for CCSD to move on to a different product that could better fit the district’s needs. Jason states, “We were trying to find a way to streamline our assessment strategy and use something similar for all of our core subject areas”.

When asked, what made the District decide to move forward with the Derivita platform for their Common and District-wide assessments, Jason responded, “We were very interested in the reporting feature for Derivita - that was really big”. He also comments that Derivita was able to provide a similar product as their previous vendor, “plus the reports and they [Derivita’s Reports] were more user friendly.”

Jason also comments that CCSD, “just developed a good relationship with them [Derivita], where they were really catering to a lot of the things that we needed specifically for our district”.

Since the implementation of Derivita’s assessment system, CCSD’s educators have been “working closely” with Derivita’s Content and Commercial Team “to improve those assessments and Item Banks”.

An Educational Partner

Last school year, Derivita representatives met with CCSD’s Curriculum Department once a week to ensure the District Instructional Specialists had a strong understanding of Derivita before taking the platform to individual schools.

Jason says that Derivita “catered to our district” with the CCSD curriculum and corresponding items already existing in the Derivita Item Bank - making it quick and easy for teachers to search and find the content they need.

Jason also comments that CCSD’s dedicated Derivita Representative, Sherri Abel, has been essential in increasing the staff's understanding of the platform throughout the district. He offers a recent example, “I just called her last week because I had a new testing coordinator at one of our high schools who wanted to learn more about Derivita. So I reached out to Sherri and she's going to set up a meeting with her one-on-one”.

Derivita also ensures that there are many opportunities throughout the year for teachers to ask questions and attend Derivita trainings or Derivita-provided Professional Development (PD) courses. Jason says these in-person or virtual events typically have “lots of attendance”, which encourages platform usage and improved instruction.

A tool to be used daily

Jason wants the CCSD teaching staff to know that Derivita is a tool that can be used every day in the classroom, instead of once or twice a year like other digital assessment providers. By using Derivita for EOC exams, common assessments, formative assessments, quizzes, and other exams - there will be an increase in the amount of high-quality data the specialists and teachers can access to identify patterns, areas of growth, knowledge gaps, student progress, etc.

This means CCSD educators don't get “halfway through the semester” and get just “one great report” from one or two assessments. Instead, the regularly updated Derivita Reports can be used to create an “ongoing” plan of action to improve instruction and students’ learning outcomes.

Jason says the CCSD teachers are starting to see the benefit of using Derivita daily, where they can even “just use [Derivita] for one question” if they want or need to.

Jason says that “change” in Education can be difficult and met with resistance. He remembers that the first year, “the math team loved it”, but the other subject educators were more hesitant. Jason comments that it took “about a year” for everyone to get on board.

Jason says the multiple opportunities to learn about Derivita in in-person and virtual trainings help create momentum for the platform. Jason says he even could conduct a Derivita training session at this point!

But instead of conducting his own Derivita workshop, Jason tries to include Derivita in his individual teacher feedback sessions. He says, “I will go into a school and work with a teacher, and one of the pieces of feedback that I always give them - especially if I haven't seen evidence of them using it [Derivita] - is just ‘Hey, have you thought about using Derivita for certain things?’ So I do that on a daily basis”.

Jason says “Teachers love the SpotCheck feature and that’s unique to Derivita” and that it is something they want to use. He also claims that keeping the Derivita platform implemented for the last three years and the constant improvements made to the platform’s reports and capabilities are contributing factors that help teachers embrace the platform.

“I think once they've realized, and dug into it, how much they have their fingertips- it's just really well received. So we have seen a lot of teachers using it, especially to start off the school year”.
