On behalf of our 130 member organisations around the country, the Settlement Council of Australia extends its deepest sympathies to the Assyrian community. We wish Bishop, His Grace, Mar Mari Emmanuel, Father Isaac, and all those injured in yesterday’s attack a full and speedy recovery.
Everywhere in Australia should be free from violence, and places of worship are especially sacred. Spaces for self-reflection, spiritual connection, and community life are important parts of Australian society that deserve the utmost respect and protection, no matter their creed.
Many members of the Assyrian Orthodox community sought refuge in Australia from violence and persecution. The violation of the trust they have placed in our country is tragic.
Re-establishing a sense of safety and belonging for all those who come to call Australia home is a core part of our mandate. Over recent days, weeks and months, we have witnessed the fraying of social cohesion before our very eyes.
In the days and weeks to come, we must regroup and reflect on the growing task ahead of us to ensure we continue to be a country that is welcoming of all, and quickly dampens any flames of hatred.
